My Experience with Coco in a Nutshell

Description

Like most people, I was expecting Coco to be a carbon copy of The Book of Life (especially when I first saw the trailer), but after seeing it get rave reviews from both mainstream movie critics and actual Mexicans, I decided to give Coco a chance, and I'm SO glad that I did!

Not only did I find it better than The Book of Life, but it made me cry like a baby, and the music was AMAZING!  I'm not saying that The Book of Life was "bad", but one of my major problems with it was that most of its songs were just Mariachi versions of American pop songs, but Coco's songs were actually authentic and sounded much nicer too.  Another thing that I loved about Coco was how it showcased Mexican culture.  Sure, The Book of Life did a little bit of that as well, but that movie was more about the love triangle between the 3 main characters than the actual holiday of Dio de los Muertos.

Also, as I've mentioned in this meme, Coco actually felt like a mix between Beetlejuice, Spirited Away and Kubo and the Two Strings.

- The Land of the Dead in this movie has ghost information booths and ghosts offices, as well as waiting lines for new arrivals, just like in Beetlejuice.

- Miguel accidentally winds up in a spirit world and his body becomes transparent like a ghost as he spends more time there, and eventually has to cross a magical bridge in order to get home, just like Chihiro in Spirited Away.

- It's a story with a heavy emphasis on family with a lot of spiritual/supernatural/mythological elements thrown in there, and the main character is a young boy that plays a string instrument, just like Kubo.

Anyway, I loved Coco, and wouldn't mind seeing it again. :)

What I expected and what I got were the same.  The closest we'll ever come to having a Grim Fandango movie. :D (Big Grin)
